Quality Reading For Turntable (Scratch) Nerds

URB chatted up with A-Trak, Craze, and Tony Vegas about the DMC and the current state of battle djs.

Quick links, but long read.

Also, does anyone have Thud Rumble, The Main Event? Can't seem to find that anywhere. It has the last performance of the Invisbl Skratch Piklz. There was a brief clip in the documentary Skratch, but I'd like to see the whole thing. any help, greatly appreciated, and thanks for reading.

Summer Jam

This past weekend, some friends and I drove out to Homer, Alaska to attend a wedding. Good times and loads of fun. On the drive back, we heard an NPR story about potential summerjams of 2009. They did acknowledge that Black Eye Peas' "I Gotta A Feeling" is the popular most infectious song of summer. They also pointed out that the death of MJ made Jackson return to the top of the charts, despite living in an era when no one really buys music anyway. The guest reviewer ended up picking Amerie's "Why RU" as her 2009 summer jam, even though the album won't be released until the fall.

As for my summer jam? I'm going with Crystal Fighters' "Xtatic Truth." The original song is my favorite version. The remixes are okay, but there's something truly unique about the og. The lyrics are about loneliness, but I can imagine groups of people chanting it in unison, and the sound has tons of energy, which makes the song my anthem for the summer.

(via Cocaine Blunts via 38th Notes)

Word.

Useless Trivia; I still appreciate my Bay Area association, despite living in Anchorage, AK since middle school. I was born in Hayward, grandparents lived in Oakland, and I still have plenty of family in Cali. Also, my brother lives in San Jose. Its nice to know that's only a plane ticket away.

"Based in Perth, Australia, Radio Dingbat delivers online music news from around the world with a regular episodic series of live performances and interviews with independent and experimental artists. Transmission received."

Seriously, one of the better channels I've stumbled upon on youtube. Quality videos of live performances with decent interviews of bands you love or didn't know you love. The above videos were released this week and at the time of this post have had less than 100 views. That's not really relevant, but I think more people should watch their vids. Major props!

Foreign Policy Meets Rap

" Some of the greatest minds in national security have turned their attention to a classic problem: When there is one dominant power, the rest of the world tries to challenge it"

Rapper Feud Mirrors World Politics

NPR did a fun interview with Marc Lynch about his article on The Game vs. Jay-Z beef that oringally appeared in Foreign Policy. You can read his whole piece, along with plenty of hyperlink sources over here. Lynch is a professor at George Washington University, so his take isn't completely wack, nor wacky, and at the very least it's generated plenty of online discussion.

Also, be sure to check out Egon, of Stones Throw fame, music series called Funk Archaeology.

Really fresh art from iri5, Erika Iris Simmons. She uses cassette tapes for her work called "Ghost in the Machine." Mr. Hudson

The stars are aligning for Mr. Hudson to go Supernova. He's nearly unknown stateside, unless you were able to get hold of his first album "A Tale of Two Cities." It made my Top Albums of 2007 list, and I used to play him during Push Play's radio days. He gained quite a following on myspace back then, and even caught the attention of Kanye West who signed him to his label.

PS22 Chorus

I'd like to think I'm a sponge for all things pop-culture and internet-hype, but somethings slip by from time to time. I feel like why didn't anyone tell me about the greatest thing EVER...Probably more my fault for not listening, but when Hasselhoff is up on the most awesome coolest thing EVER, you feel like you're out of touch..*sigh*

PS22 choir in Staten Island have been generating plenty of internet buzz for the cover versions, which at times are way better than the original. Formed in the year 2000, they are an ever-changing group of 5th graders from a public elementary school in New York City. They even appeared on Passion Pit's latest album. Here's the Fader video of the kids in the studio with Passion Pit;

I'm a sucker for nudity. The first video is from a French electro group Make The Girl Dance. Ironically, found via hypebeast (a site known for sneakers and cool clothes, as opposed to the opposite; nudity). Most people may have seen the second video or at the very least heard of the band Matt & Kim. They were brave enough to march down Times Square and start stripping down to their birthday suits. Mayer Hawthorne is The Truth (Re-Edit, Updated Vid)

Mayer Hawthorne has a new single and here's a simple video for the song. My first introduction to Mayer Hawthorn was through DJ Addverse. After bar hours closed, the bartenders and workers would request some tunes as they shut down. Mainly, the music was pretty chill, but not in that martini lounge setting way. More like The Doors and soul music. Each time Mayer would play, your lips come together and go "oooo." Then when I found out the vinyl is heart-shaped, color-red and he's a white dude who's NOT dead(!)..omg, where has he been all my life?. Soul music for REAL.

plus, Stones Throw record owner, Peanut Butter Wolf is good creepy;

Phoenix - Lisztomania (brat pack mashup)

This makes me wish summer was already here, instead of spring break-up. I can't wait for the French band that sings in English Phoenix's 1901 to come out. I might be setting my expectations too high, but I think it could be the summer album for 2009.

Michel Gondrey

Today, director Michel Gondrey has launched his official website. Nothing really of interest, unless you want to buy stuff, which is kind of lame coming from a guy who's last film was all about do-it-yourself. Movies ain't cheap, eh? Adventureland

I'm a sucker for good "coming-of age" movies. There's a hint of nostaglia that makes you remember "back in the days..." The really good stories reveal how messy and scary growing up can be. Gregg Mottola's Adventureland falls in the good category. This Nerve article has a decent enough review of the film, so I'll spare you a summary review.

Yo La Tengo handles the original music to the film, which makes the film 10x more awesome, but the music credits don't stop there. This site reveals how much good music is in the film and makes me what to take all of my friends to go see it just to enjoy the music. Thank goodness, it's a good film as well. (I orginally planned to see Fast & Furious with my little brother, but he had plans to see that already, so I took him to a movie I was going to see anyway) For a little more information on Yo La Tengo's film music contribtutions, check here.

Klosterman

Chuck Klosterman gave a lecture along with Q&A session about a week here in Anchorage. Klosterman is a writer known for his memoirs, Fargo Rock City, Sex Drugs & Cocoa Puffs, and his writing for Esquire and Spin magazine. He talked about his development as a writer which was kind of catered to the expected audience; students at UAA (the event was free to the public). Of course, his speech and Q&A session had plenty of pop references and he was just as witty live compared to his writing.

You can always learn something from someone's development, but Klosterman warns that he doesn't have a ritual. He did go through a post-college newspaper job that he called his "woodshedding" period, and he must have saw a lot of blank faces so he briefly explained "woodshedding." This bit of knowledge was enlightening because I feel like this stage of my is what Klosterman is describing. I'm not saying I'll become a writer like he is, but maybe I'm honing skills that will be very practical in my profession just like a musician who dedicates themself to a craft.

Portraits of BBC Radio DJs

"Ninety per cent of the population tune in every week and with listening figures soaring, top radio presenters reveal the highs and lows of broadcasting. Portraits by James Mollison"

That freaking blows my mind away! 90 Percent! Then again, I'm not sure what the rest of the statistic means. Is that out of the whole UK population? Is it out of the 3 million who listen to radio? Nonetheless, to have 90% is incredible no matter what the rest of stat means. Also, the above portrait is Annie Mac. She is mainly known for her show called "Mash-Up," which could be described as the show you would want to hear prior to going out on the weekend or if you're a fan of dance music with a bit of bounce that will instantly make you want to dance and tear the club up. Then again, that's just what I think whenever I hear her show.

Btw, sometime down the line, I'll give proper love to some stateside radio people, especially folks doing things in Alaska.

This unofficial Flying Lotus video from Brendan Sinnott blends some wonderful scenes from essential Sci-Fi films. Be sure to also check out Bredan's bonus video. Another bonus; Flying Lotus did a 2 hour mix for the BBC1 radio show Essential Mix, which you can download over here.

The sci-fi element reminds of the promo videos Kanye had made for his listening parties for his Graduation album. The one below borrows from 2046 from Wong Kar-wai. I think this version of Flashing Lights was way better than the official video directed by Spike Jonze. Speaking of Spike, do check out the Where the Wild Things Are trailer. It's amazing!

Wild Is The Wind

I finished watching Steven Soderberg's CHE (Parts 1 & 2) at the Bear Tooth, which is a second-run theater/restaurant. The charm to this Anchorage establishment is that you can order REAL food, and it will be delivered to you while the film plays. If you're +21, then you order beer/wine on the first floor. If not, no worries, since you can enjoy the film on the balcony. I kind of prefer the view from the top because it reminds me of watching films on the military base growing up in Hawaii.

The Bear Tooth used to have a better art house selection years ago, but I could only assume management realized that profits were better off by showing more "Hollywood" films. I'm still amazed that people will show up and not know what is playing. All they want to do is eat, drink, and zone out to whatever is on the big screen.

aNWAYs,
Nina Simone's version of "Wild Is The Wind" is a perfect selection for the trailer to Revolutionary Road. It's very haunting, but fits so well. I tried a video search for an actual Nina Simone performance of this song, but no-go, instead I found a pretty cool black and white video of David Bowie tackling "Wild is the Wind."

I <3 URB Mag

I was going to blog about losing a cd and the pains of music karma, but then I realized there is an easy solution to my conundrum. Back-up your data, and make copies.

When I first really got into music, URB magazine was a fundamental resource. Living in Alaska, you're kind of detached from whatever "scene" is happening and this was right before file-sharing became all the rage. URB filled a void that I desperately needed during my high school years. I still have a box of back issues in my parents home. [Sidenote, it was funny to hear at a lecture the person introducing someone say "featured in U-R-B."] The magazine has been around since the early 90s and the video below helps to explain the history and role of URB as told by the creator Raymond Roker.

Episode 02-Raymond Roker-Hay Fam Show from Hay Fam Show on Vimeo.

URB is still going strong and I have to give props to two recent posts found on their blog that coincidentally give props to Detroit. One is a video on Detroit techno label Underground Resistance, which is right below. The other post is a link to a New York Times article titled "This Band Was Punk Before Punk Was Punk," which pretty much says it all.

Wow!

I'm drifting away from my usual music-based posts, but it still kind of fits in. There's an awesome music video for the Handsome Fur's song "I'm Confused," which is really cool but not the focus of this entry. Do check out that video, can you ever go wrong with zombies?

Whenever I like a video posted on the internet, I try to check who posted it because often times they'll have other stuff worth watching. The editor to the Handsome Furs is Sarah Marcus, and I don't know much about her, other than she has some videos up on vimeo. I was completely floored by her documentary that's a work in progress. I'm not going say too much about it, other than check it out;

USC Marching Band W/Radiohead

In February, I watched the Grammys while working on a Sunday. The work was stressful since it was my first time handling a Sunday shift, but we made it happen. Most of the Grammys I didn't care to watch, but sometimes you zone out when the TV's on. During one of the performances, the intern asks "who is this band?" I reply "It's Radiohead." I didn't even know it was them until she asked, and I had to stop and listen to the group. I thought it was cool that they were performing with a marching band, but then my thought was wrecked by the next thing the intern said; "they suck." *sigh* Damn young kids, don't know what's good music. I thought about defending the group, but that didn't happen because I told myself; don't worry, she's young, plus she was home-schooled. Not that I have anything against home-schooling.

Here's a video behind the scenes with the USC marching band;

Here's the actual Grammy performance;

At Home

The Fader visited the Brick Bandits headquarters in New Jersey, and it was really cool to see like-minded creative people excited. Brick Bandits are a collective of club djs/producers spread across the East Coast. Reppin' Jersey, Philly, and Chi-town.

Not necessarily connected, but seeing the Brick Bandits place reminded of MTV cribs. I only liked seeing the musicians homes because all the other famous people's homes were lame. "Hey, look at my fridge...look at my cars..." Yawn! Some of the musicians were also lame, but those were mainly singers. If you were actually a producer or a real musician, then we always got a sneak peek into the creative work place, which was the best part of the show.

I think my favorite cribs were Moby and Redman. Moby had a cool Manhattan spot and was insightful about his home. Such as the irony of having a dinner table that was once a butcher table since he's vegan. Also, a book shelf! Redman had a great sense of humor and I always wondered if he was joking, but I think he was for real and he's a funny dude. "Rub these wires together for the doorbell" or "Everyone needs a money box"

Beats In Space

I don't remember when I stumbled upon Tim Sweeney's radio show "Beats In Space," but I wish I found it sooner. His website updated last month, and is looking fresh. If you're in New York, then catch it on WNYU 89.1 FM every Tuesday night from 10:30pm to 1:00am. On the web, there's a plethora of archived shows that you can stream or download over here. If you're a fan of LCD Soundsystem or DFA records, then his show is a perfect match for you.

ELSEWHERE;

Speaking of site update, Pitchfork must have updated in the last two weeks and I totally missed it while making the rounds.

I had no idea Jessica Suarez had a blog. I remember her writing in the CMJ monthly and Pitchfork, and totally agreeing with most of her work that I read without even knowing she wrote them until I checked the author.

Mary Anne Hobbs, I so have a crush on you

Sounds a little creepy whenever somebody admits their crush in public, but it's true. Women with good music taste, instant crush. Then reality hits, not a chance. *sigh* At least we have the music.

Mary Anne Hobbs hosts a radio show over on BBC1, which is pretty amazing. It fulfills that weirdo-electronic taste you didn't know you have. In this video from the wonderful magazine XLR8R, she drops some knowledge on why she's digging some West Coast sounds and the UK scene. Also, big ups to the late John Peel and she rocks a wicked pair of shoes.

J'adore Paris

The Take-Away Shows over at La Blogotheque is one of the best music video websites you can visit if you haven't done so already. The performances appear really stripped down, and that creates a new level of beauty and intimacy if you're familar with the source material. Even if you're not familar with the songs or artists, you can still appreciate these videos.

I really like the videos shot in Paris because there always seem to be something unexpected that adds a unique quality to the perfomance. Check out Arcade Fire in an elevator or the kids jamming to Menomena. Plus, I've always wanted to visit Paris anyway and these videos just re-enforce my urge to go.

library love

(Photo credit: SomewhereinAK)

Before the Internet made things more accessible by a simple click download, getting good music took a little more savvy. One of the best places to go is the library. We all know that it's the place for books and reading, but I had no idea there was a media section when I was a kid. It blew my mind and I would constantly check out my limit of 5 cds. Near the library exit, there was a discard bin with free magazines and books. Years later as I got into vinyl, it dawned on me that the discard bin was an old wooden record shelf. When the Internet really took off, I kind of abandoned digging through the library cd collection. I still check out books and dvds, and will occasionally read some magazines when I have a couple free hours. It's still a great place to visit, and easily one of my favorite places in Anchorage or any city.

Record Collections

Years ago, some friends of mine started up an online magazine called Banter Online. I forget the mission statement or the primary focus, but I do remember contributing a really weak section called "On The Record." I say weak because I was very green with my writing and photography. Actually, I still am very green in both respects, but I'm working on them. What I tried doing was taking photo essays of DJs/collectors' record collections in Anchorage. The online magazine lasted only one issue for various reasons, and I ended up shooting four of my DJ friend's collection before I shifted focus to other things. Nonetheless, you can still see some photos at flickr, and perhaps someday I'll revive the photo project.

Dusts and Grooves - A diggin photo blog
I came across a Brooklyn-based, via Tel Aviv, via Mexico City, photographer's blog, which is doing what I attempted years ago. It's still in its early stages, but I'm digging the vibe and hope the guy keeps up with the project.

Too Legit Too Quit

As a kid, my family would visit our grandparents in the Bay Area whenever we had a chance. I remember many shenanigans with my cousins and little brother (My youngest brother was still a baby). They were good times, and I wish I could visit more often, but that's part of growing up. Hammer was mega huge back then, and I'm not gonna front and say I didn't like him. It's quite the opposite. I thought his stuff was entertaining and I always did like him more than Vanilla Ice. I still have Bay love, despite spending most of my life outside of my birthplace; Hayward, CA.

Hammer has been steadily making a come back and has a decent amount of people following him on twitter. I'm not sure if he or anyone could make it to the level he did in the early 90's, but I like seeing good people do their thing. One of his twitter posts today makes me wish I was little more focused and humble.

Hammer's Top 5 things to do today :
1.Gym
2.production meetings
3.Dancejam
4.rehearsals.
5.Be grateful and appreciative to be among the living

My today list looks like this;
1. Work on dad's resume
2. Continue reading Hitman by Bret Hart
3. Watch rented dvd
4. Sleep
5. ?

But I wish it was a little more like;
1. Gym
2. Listen to vinyl
3. Drink coffee and read
4. Have dinner with friends (or better, cook dinner for friends)
5. Bike to work

Sasquatch 2009 Line-Up

Several years ago, I went to the Sasquatch out in the Gorge in Washington. It's a twothree day music festival held in a wonderful outdoor venue with three stages. For whatever reason, the year I went turned out to be anti-climatic. The pacing of the line-up along with the actual line-up did not work well. Yes, the big name acts get primetime, but you have to build tempo as well so that everyone is amped not bored and ready to call it a night. Now that I got that out of my system, I'm going to do a 180, and say that this year's line-up has me very tempted to fly out to Washington and give Sasquatch another try.

Day 1

The Decemberists
Animal Collective
Bon Iver
Sun Kil Moon

Day 2

Go Ram!

One of the best films I've seen this year was The Wrestler. Everyone did a terrific job and it really shows. All the praise that Mickey Rourke is getting is well deserved and often overshadows the other actors' performances, but don't sleep on Marisa Tomei . She really pulled it off and even had my friend who I saw the film with say "I want to be as hot as Marisa Tomei when I'm in my 40's." The film breaks your heart, but you love that it does that and Bruce Springsteen's song is a perfect example. I'm rooting for The Wrestler and especially for Rourke at this year's Oscars.

Bonus; Mickey appeared on Charlie Rose last week, and you can watch the video over here, but note it clocks in at 54 minutes.

Top 10 Albums for 2007

1. Low - Drums and Guns:
When I popped this album in the cd player, I must have listened to it five times in a row with no breaks. It absolutely floored me. It's an album I must listen to from start to finish. I can't remember the last time that happened.

2. The Field - From Here We Go Sublime:
After reading that Prefuse 73 enjoyed this album, I bought it on a whim. I can listen to this WHENEVER. So simple, minimal, but essential.

3. M.I.A. - Kala:
She does it again. Making the world feel like a global community. Merging so many sounds into a cohesive and focused sound that bangs.

4. Menomena - Friend and Foe:
This will be the slept on album that will make people go "how did I miss this?"

5. Feist - The Reminder:
Everyone's favorite singer to fall in love with came out with her third album. Most people know it from various commercials and tv appearances. But don't be a sucker, she broke my heart again with the album opener "So Sorry."

6. Mr. Hudson and The Library - A Tale of Two Cities:
A charming English lad and band..Let's hope their album hits stateside. Kanye West even picked them when he curated myspace's music page.

7. Justice - Cross:
Monster on the dancefloor. Forget the remixes and D.A.N.C.E. to every song or at least try to keep up.

8. Bat for Lashes - Fur and Gold:
Imagine the English cousins to Coco Rosie brewing darker spells and going for midnight bicycle rides.

9. Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings - 100 Days & 100 Nights:
With Amy Winehouse rejecting rehab, people should accept Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings into their lives.

10. Wale and Catchdubs - 100 Miles and Running:
In the year when Radiohead and Saul Williams gave away albums for free, mixtapes have always been a great free (thanks to bootlegs and the internet) promotion for hip-hop. Catchdubs ups the ante with his collabo with D.C. rapper Wale who kills it on the mic.

The New York Times has a photo slideshow of Dangermouse's workspace.

The following links are probably a year old, but there's nothing on TV anyway so go ahead and revisit them.

The Guardian's 1000 Albums To Hear Before You Die

The Guardian has a massive feature on 1000 albums to hear before you die. It's an A-Z list that strays away from obvious selections that are xeroxed on other music lists. One letter than immediately stands out is J, from J Dilla to Junior Boys. The letter J has an impressive roster that includes Michael Jackson, Jay-Z, Janis Joplin, Joy Division, and even Daniel Johnston just to name a few. The letter Q has the least number of selections and its not hard to understand why. Ever try playing Scrabble? Qbert's "Wave Twisters" from 1998 could have been included in the list. An album composed entirely of DJ's scratching records that was later translated into a full-length animation of the same name. The Guardian realized that their list would spark conservation, and even did a follow-up feature that picked out what readers felt should have made the cut. Overall, their list spans a vast amount of artists and genres and would take a life-time to hear.

Back sort of...

I haven't killed the Push Play blog yet because it has some of my favorite links on one site where I can access anywhere. Plus, I may try some things like a podcast or uncensored version of Push Play. I'll keep you updated.

IN THE MIX:
Mickey Factz - Heaven's Fallout: I believe the term people are throwing around is "hopster," but don't be fooled and be your own judge by downloading it here.

Tittsworth went on an Australian tour and made a mix(right-click save as) for Opulent magazine.

Discobelle gets some of the best movers and shakers of the DJ scene to mix it up for them. Dave Nada throws down a half-hour of solid cuts that would slay dance floors.

PROPER RELEASES:
Hot 8 Brass Band - Rock with the Hot 8: C'mon! A Brass band cover of "Sexual Healing." What else do you need to know?

Kenna - Make Sure They See My Face: If I made music, then I wish I could be like Kenna. You can hear so many influences, but it's fused into a distinct voice that I really dig.

Chromatics - IV: I know I've already proclaimed my single of the year, but when I heard "Running Up the Hill" I nearly reconsidered. It's a song that would work in any setting. The rest of the album is in the same vein of italo-disco. Minimal, Steady pace, and at times haunting.

My singles of the year are something like this:

1. Soulsavers - Revival
2. Chromatics - Running Up the Hill
3. M.I.A. - Paper Planes
4. TV on the Radio - I Was a Lover
5. Justice - D.A.N.C.E.

So This Is Goodbye (R.I.P. Push Play 2004-2007 on KRUA)

I've felt the need to end Push Play for the whole year. When I shared my hesitations with fellow KRUA DJ's, most insisted that it not be cancelled. I kept it going, but have found myself to the point where I'm uninspired, unmotivated, and dare I say just faking it. [Last show will be 10/21, open invite to join me in the studio, just holler, out of state or international email pushplaykrua@gmail.com]

In simple and clichéd words that I hope many others will be able to say, KRUA changed my life. I'll forever be grateful for my time at the station, both as a volunteer and staff member. It's always been a belief of mine that you get what you give. Maybe I've become way too self-centered or needy, but I've recently questioned what has KRUA done for me? Meaning, I don't believe KRUA is giving me what I give (gave) it.

Perhaps, karma has kicked in or more appropriately, "payback is a bitch." It's still too early for me to fully analyze my faults in running the station. The Catholic in me struggles to confess and forgive. It's melodramatic, but for two years it was my life. Maybe this has been my greatest fault, not letting go. Everyone has been nice enough not to mention my failure with the exception of a few, but I suspect they think less of me. I would like to believe there were a number of factors leading to my falling out, but the fact remains that I was in charge; therefore, I'm more responsible than any other factor. This burden has sucked away my passion for KRUA and Push Play, but it has not killed my love or appreciation for radio.

I'll forever hold dear my memories and bonds that have grown from KRUA. But it's safe to say, it's my time to end my stay at KRUA. Queue outro; Nina Simone – Feeling Good.

Summer is Going to Hurt You

Loving the summer of 07. Despite the lack of employment, it's been all good. At the end of May, I went to St. Paul with my dad for an award banquet. Bounced over to Seattle to spend time with a good friend before she moves to Boston. Went down to Sacramento to kick with the family, and had a road trip to Las Vegas as well.
Been back in the AK for a number of weeks, but KRUA is going through some technical issues. Also, summer time in Alaska is probably one of the most beautiful places in the world. Can you blame djs for a college station to play hooky during this time of year? Anyway, what I'm trying to say is thanks to all of you who still check the blog and KRUA out on the regular. Hopefully, we'll be up and running in a more consistent manner soon enough.
