Top 10 Albums for 2007

1. Low - Drums and Guns:
When I popped this album in the cd player, I must have listened to it five times in a row with no breaks. It absolutely floored me. It's an album I must listen to from start to finish. I can't remember the last time that happened.

2. The Field - From Here We Go Sublime:
After reading that Prefuse 73 enjoyed this album, I bought it on a whim. I can listen to this WHENEVER. So simple, minimal, but essential.

3. M.I.A. - Kala:
She does it again. Making the world feel like a global community. Merging so many sounds into a cohesive and focused sound that bangs.

4. Menomena - Friend and Foe:
This will be the slept on album that will make people go "how did I miss this?"

5. Feist - The Reminder:
Everyone's favorite singer to fall in love with came out with her third album. Most people know it from various commercials and tv appearances. But don't be a sucker, she broke my heart again with the album opener "So Sorry."

6. Mr. Hudson and The Library - A Tale of Two Cities:
A charming English lad and band..Let's hope their album hits stateside. Kanye West even picked them when he curated myspace's music page.

7. Justice - Cross:
Monster on the dancefloor. Forget the remixes and D.A.N.C.E. to every song or at least try to keep up.

8. Bat for Lashes - Fur and Gold:
Imagine the English cousins to Coco Rosie brewing darker spells and going for midnight bicycle rides.

9. Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings - 100 Days & 100 Nights:
With Amy Winehouse rejecting rehab, people should accept Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings into their lives.

10. Wale and Catchdubs - 100 Miles and Running:
In the year when Radiohead and Saul Williams gave away albums for free, mixtapes have always been a great free (thanks to bootlegs and the internet) promotion for hip-hop. Catchdubs ups the ante with his collabo with D.C. rapper Wale who kills it on the mic.

The New York Times has a photo slideshow of Dangermouse's workspace.

The following links are probably a year old, but there's nothing on TV anyway so go ahead and revisit them.

The Guardian's 1000 Albums To Hear Before You Die

The Guardian has a massive feature on 1000 albums to hear before you die. It's an A-Z list that strays away from obvious selections that are xeroxed on other music lists. One letter than immediately stands out is J, from J Dilla to Junior Boys. The letter J has an impressive roster that includes Michael Jackson, Jay-Z, Janis Joplin, Joy Division, and even Daniel Johnston just to name a few. The letter Q has the least number of selections and its not hard to understand why. Ever try playing Scrabble? Qbert's "Wave Twisters" from 1998 could have been included in the list. An album composed entirely of DJ's scratching records that was later translated into a full-length animation of the same name. The Guardian realized that their list would spark conservation, and even did a follow-up feature that picked out what readers felt should have made the cut. Overall, their list spans a vast amount of artists and genres and would take a life-time to hear.

Back sort of...

I haven't killed the Push Play blog yet because it has some of my favorite links on one site where I can access anywhere. Plus, I may try some things like a podcast or uncensored version of Push Play. I'll keep you updated.

IN THE MIX:
Mickey Factz - Heaven's Fallout: I believe the term people are throwing around is "hopster," but don't be fooled and be your own judge by downloading it here.

Tittsworth went on an Australian tour and made a mix(right-click save as) for Opulent magazine.

Discobelle gets some of the best movers and shakers of the DJ scene to mix it up for them. Dave Nada throws down a half-hour of solid cuts that would slay dance floors.

PROPER RELEASES:
Hot 8 Brass Band - Rock with the Hot 8: C'mon! A Brass band cover of "Sexual Healing." What else do you need to know?

Kenna - Make Sure They See My Face: If I made music, then I wish I could be like Kenna. You can hear so many influences, but it's fused into a distinct voice that I really dig.

Chromatics - IV: I know I've already proclaimed my single of the year, but when I heard "Running Up the Hill" I nearly reconsidered. It's a song that would work in any setting. The rest of the album is in the same vein of italo-disco. Minimal, Steady pace, and at times haunting.

My singles of the year are something like this:

1. Soulsavers - Revival
2. Chromatics - Running Up the Hill
3. M.I.A. - Paper Planes
4. TV on the Radio - I Was a Lover
5. Justice - D.A.N.C.E.

So This Is Goodbye (R.I.P. Push Play 2004-2007 on KRUA)

I've felt the need to end Push Play for the whole year. When I shared my hesitations with fellow KRUA DJ's, most insisted that it not be cancelled. I kept it going, but have found myself to the point where I'm uninspired, unmotivated, and dare I say just faking it. [Last show will be 10/21, open invite to join me in the studio, just holler, out of state or international email pushplaykrua@gmail.com]

In simple and clichéd words that I hope many others will be able to say, KRUA changed my life. I'll forever be grateful for my time at the station, both as a volunteer and staff member. It's always been a belief of mine that you get what you give. Maybe I've become way too self-centered or needy, but I've recently questioned what has KRUA done for me? Meaning, I don't believe KRUA is giving me what I give (gave) it.

Perhaps, karma has kicked in or more appropriately, "payback is a bitch." It's still too early for me to fully analyze my faults in running the station. The Catholic in me struggles to confess and forgive. It's melodramatic, but for two years it was my life. Maybe this has been my greatest fault, not letting go. Everyone has been nice enough not to mention my failure with the exception of a few, but I suspect they think less of me. I would like to believe there were a number of factors leading to my falling out, but the fact remains that I was in charge; therefore, I'm more responsible than any other factor. This burden has sucked away my passion for KRUA and Push Play, but it has not killed my love or appreciation for radio.

I'll forever hold dear my memories and bonds that have grown from KRUA. But it's safe to say, it's my time to end my stay at KRUA. Queue outro; Nina Simone – Feeling Good.
